The Different Types of Compost

There are about three different forms of composting; they can be characterized as Anaerobic, Aerobic, and Vermicomposting. While the three don’t heavily differ, each is important to ensure healthy growth within our gardens.
 Anaerobic Composting
Anaerobic Composting
Occurs without the use of air; while this is low maintenance, it takes many years to break down materials causing your compost bin to smell horribly. Bacteria in the compost will eventually decompose the organic material into compounds such as methane and ammonia.

Aerobic Composting

Aerobic Composting
This type of composting requires the use of air along with high temperatures (up to 160 degrees!). With the heat and air, the organic material will decompose in a matter of days with proper maintenance.
Vermicomposting
Vermicomposting
With this type of composting, the use of insects (i.e. worms) and fungi and bacteria are vital to break down the organic material properly. This type of composting is used mainly with food and requires a somewhat heavy maintenance as you must monitor and change the moisture levels and temperature settings for the insects.
